Easy Strawberry Cobbler with Fresh or Frozen Strawberries

This strawberry cobbler recipe  is one of my favorite desserts to whip up for a couple of reasons:

  1. It’s made with pantry ingredients! This makes it a great dessert option that everyone will love.
  2. You can use fresh or frozen strawberries. Maybe you’re trying to use fresh, in-season strawberries you have in your fridge or maybe you have a bag of frozen strawberries you haven’t touched. You can make this dessert either way!
  3. It can be served warm, cold, or at room temperature. And it’s good no matter what!

This recipe is so quick and simple to make and it creates the perfect decadent treat…especially served with fresh whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Tips and Notes

  • Fresh vs. frozen strawberries. I usually use fresh strawberries, but if you want to make your strawberry cobbler with frozen strawberries instead, those will work too!
  • If you do decide to use frozen strawberries, make sure you put them into the cobbler frozen. Otherwise, you’ll end up with watery cobbler.
  • Taste the berries ahead of time and adjust the sugar as needed. You may need more or less depending on the sweetness of the fruit.
  • Grease the baking dish. This helps prevent the dough from sticking or burning on the bottom.
  • Don’t stir the batter and strawberries together. Just place them gently on the top of the batter. It will rise up around them as it bakes.
  • If you don’t have granulated sugar, you can use light brown sugar in its place.

Variations

  • Use another fruit. Swap the strawberries out for blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries. You could also even do mixed berries if preferred!
  • Kick the strawberry flavor up a notch. If you’d like a more pronounced strawberry flavor, add ¼ cup of strawberry jam to the filling.
  • Add some citrus. Give your cobbler a subtle, tart citrus flavor by adding some lemon zest or juice to the filling.

Storage and Reheating

Refrigerator: Leftover cobbler can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 2 to 3 days. Keep in mind that the longer it sits, the soggier the crust will get, so the sooner you enjoy it, the better!

Freezer: To freeze your cobbler, put it in an airtight container and place into a freezer bag or wrap the cooled baking dish tightly with plastic wrap and foil. Freeze for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to serve, thaw overnight in the fridge.

Is Cobbler the Same as a Crumble or Crisp?

Not quite. Both cobblers and crisps are made with a sweet, gooey, usually fruity filling. However, the difference is in the topping.

Crisps are made with a streusel topping consisting of oats and sugar. Cobblers are made with a topping more similar to biscuit dough.

What is a Cobbler Crust Made Of?

Cobbler “crust” is more of a batter that bakes into a dough. It’s made with a mixture of flour, sugar, milk, butter, and baking powder.
