I don’t know about you guys and gals, but I love dips and spreads. The cheesier, the better is my motto. For today, I decided to re-write this post from 2017.

Mainly, because Kim just wrapped a video for it and we figured, if we’re adding a video, might as well update the writing. When the cheese spread recipe first went out, it wasn’t bad, just a little low on the SEO grading scale.

Since, both Kim and I have improved in our respective departments, it just makes sense to bring this one up to par.

Now, getting back to the dip, most of us at some point in our lives have asked,”how is cheese spread made?” It’s actually quite simple.

In fact, most bloggers, companies, and home cooks use similar recipes to create soft, spreadable cheeses. Cream cheese is the obvious choice, because, once it softens a little, it creates a creamy texture.

As far as I know, it’s one of the few cheeses, in the U.S., that can spread easily over just about anything. When combined with the right seasonings, you can take boring cream cheese and turn it into a cheese dip.

Whether you decide to make savory or sweet, is up to you. Personally, I enjoy both varieties equally. For an example of a sweet cream cheese based dip, check out our turtle cheesecake dip.

Well, there’s not much more I can say about these yummy offerings. How about we get started?

Cheese Spread Instructions:

As I said earlier, it’s an easy appetizer to make and only takes a couple of steps. First, remove the cream cheese from your refrigerator at least an hour before you begin the recipe.

It should be reasonably soft; otherwise, your spread will have beads of unmixed cheese.

Next, in a stand mixer or large mixing bowl with a hand mixer, combine the cream cheese, hot sauce, sour cream, vinegar, salt, pepper, dill, garlic and onion powders.

Make sure to start on a low speed, then increase it to medium as the cheese spread blends. Try for a smooth and velvety texture.

Last, transfer the cheese spread from the mixing bowl to serving dish. The dip can be made in advance, so feel free to move it to a sealed container.

It can be stored in your fridge for up to 3-days.

That’s it! This easy appetizer recipe is done. As far dipping items are concerned, you can try crackers, veggie straws, or even fresh vegetables.

Cheese Spread Tips:

If you don’t care for a buffalo flavor, then you can change up the mix slightly. How about spicy ranch dressing flavor?

Simply, use the seasonings (just the spices, not the liquid) from that recipe and combine it with the cream cheese base. Voila, you have a spicy ranch cheese spread.

For a cheddar spread, add a little cheddar cheese sauce to a cream cheese base, etc. You get the idea.

Oops, you forgot to pull the cream cheese, no worries. You have two options to help warm it up a little.

On warm day, just open your blinds or curtains and put it on the window sill for a little while. Also, if you have a space heater handy, turn it on low and put the cream cheese in front of it.

For a pretty presentation, try putting the cheese spread into a bread bowl and surround it with colorful fresh vegetables.

Given this is a buffalo recipe, I’m going to go out a limb here and say, I am willing to bet there are some male readers on this post.

This tip is just for you. If you’re a single male looking for a mate, then learn to cook. I can tell you from personal experience, a man who can cook is very desirable because it’s a dying art.

I would venture to say it’s just as important as the clothes you wear and car you drive. My final tip is this, always remember that once you learn the base ingredients to most recipes, modifying it to your tastes becomes much easier.

Furthermore, it makes you an adaptable cook and helps to build an essential life skill.

  1. Philadelphia stopped making their buffalo cream cheese dip, so I came across this recipe while searching for a replacement. I was skeptical of the dill, but tossed it in the mix exactly as the directions called for and it is AMAZING! Better than the stuff I was buying.

    1. Thank you Sarah! We’re glad you liked the cheese spread. Kim and I are huge dill fans and put into a lot of our non-blog dishes. It adds an earthy, tartness to the seasoning blends. Don’t get wrong, it doesn’t work in everything lol! But, adding dill to some of the blog recipes adds our own little twist to the dish that you may not find with other bloggers. Thank you again for commenting and rating the recipe. Have a lovely day 🙂

  2. Hi there! So happy to have found this recipe because so many always include chicken! If I were to add ranch to this would you recommend ranch salad dressing or the dip powder type ranch? How much do you think I should put in? Sorry, I’m just learning how to cool to be honest. Thank you so much!

    1. Good Morning Shanta, no worries, it’s a good question to ask 🙂 I would use powdered Ranch dip, the liquid salad dressing would make the buffalo dip runny. A quick side note, there’s quite a bit of sodium in those powdered dips. So, I would leave the salt out of our recipe because the powdered packet will add plenty of salt to the buffalo dip. I hope this information helps, have a lovely day 🙂

  3. Can we say Cinco de Mayo? This is a great recipe for parties. Thank you for sharing.

  4. My husband would LOVE this. We don’t eat meat, but he misses Buffalo Chicken Wings sometimes, and always gets Buffalo Shrimp when we see it out. We made it once or twice ourselves, but the idea of adding that sauce to a cheese dip is a stroke of brilliance. I’ll DEFINITELY be making this! Thank you!
