1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy.

2. Add the molasses, egg, and vanilla, and mix until well incorporated.

3. Add the flour, cinnamon, ginger, ground cloves, baking soda, and salt.

4. Mix just until no flour streaks remain.

5. Carefully add the hot water, and mix just until to combined.

6. Transfer the batter to the prepared cake pan.

7. Bake at 350°F for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

8. Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting or adding whipped cream.
