Shake until the shaker feels cold, about 15 seconds.
Strain into the chilled glass. Garnish with a lemon slice and serve right away.
Notes
To make the simple syrup: Add the sugar and water to a small saucepan. Warm over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves, but don't let it boil. Let it cool, then store in a jar in the fridge for 3 to 4 weeks. Using 1 cup of water and 1 cup of granulated sugar makes about 1 ¼ cups of simple syrup.
If you make a sugar rim, you'll also need a lemon wedge and a little granulated sugar.
