Get the Recipe

Line the bottoms of two 8-inch pans with parchment paper and spraying the sides with baking spray.

Combine water, sour cream, eggs, oil, and vanilla.

Next add in the white cake mix, flour, sugar, and salt, and mix until just combined.

Transfer the cake batter into the prepared cake pans and bake at 325°F for 40-50 minutes.

Place butter and shortening in the bowl of a stand mixer.

Beat to combine, then add boiling water. Beat again until fluffy and well mixed.

Divide the other half portion of frosting in half again. Add red food coloring to one of the portions.
