Best Air Fryer Onion Rings
One of my favorite foods at restaurants is beer battered onion rings with a side of ranch dressing or fry sauce. They’re always crispy and great as an appetizer while you’re waiting on the main dish.
A while back, I found a bag of Nathan’s frozen battered onion rings at my local grocery store. Since then, instead of ordering them as an appetizer, I’m making them at home.
Air frying onion rings is now something I do at least 2–3 times a month. My method only uses 2 ingredients and less than 20 minutes. Yes, two ingredients instead of one, because they taste better with a little salt.
Do you really need a “recipe” for how to air fry onion rings? Eh, probably not. But, what if you accidently throw away the bag with the time and temp or can’t get yours quite right? Maybe this is just what you need!
How to Air Fry Frozen Onion Rings
Start by preheating your air fryer to 360°F. Once the air fryer preheats, lightly spray the basket with non-stick cooking spray.
Arrange the onion rings in an even layer. To fit more onion rings into the basket, I will often place smaller rings inside the larger ones. Even still, you may need to work in batches if you’re going to cook the entire bag.
Set the time to 12–14 minutes (12 minutes for lightly browned and 14 minutes very brown). Of course, the amount of time will be dependent on your particular air fryer brand and model.
Cook the onion rings flipping halfway through to ensure both sides are evenly cooked.
When the onion rings are cooked to your liking, transfer them to wire rack and sprinkle with salt. If making the rest of the bag, carefully wipe off the air fryer basket and repeat the steps.
Tips for Flavorful, Crispy Onion Rings
Don’t overcrowd the basket. I’ve never had luck adding a bunch of onion rings to the basket and cooking an entire bag all at once. This usually leads to a soggy, soft coating instead of a crispy, crunchy exterior. Take the time to work in batches and arrange the onion rings in a single layer.
Season, season, season! One of our big pet peeves is under seasoned food, and that’s true of onion rings, too. If the brand you use isn’t seasoned, add a little salt. Table salt, kosher salt, sea salt, or seasoned salt will work. Use your favorite!
Skip the plate. If you’re making an entire bag, place the onion rings on a wire rack to cool instead. When they’re placed on a plate, they sweat and get soft.
Choose your favorite! There are several brands of frozen onion rings on the market. Some are battered and others are breaded. Use your favorite!
How to Store Leftovers
Store leftover onion rings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2–3 days.
Reheat in the air fryer for 2–3 minutes (longer if needed) until they’re warmed through and crispy.
