Pumpkin Pie Spice Recipe
This pumpkin pie spice recipe combines cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves in a simple blend that takes about 5 minutes to make. You can mix exactly 1 tablespoon for a recipe or make a larger batch to keep in the pantry.
I keep a jar around most of the year, but especially once fall baking starts. John and I both love cinnamon, so this blend has a good cinnamon base and uses more of it than any of the other spices. You can reduce it slightly if you prefer a milder cinnamon flavor.
Despite the name, there’s no actual pumpkin in pumpkin pie spice. It’s the dry spice blend used to flavor pumpkin pie, breads, muffins, pancakes, coffee drinks, and plenty of other fall recipes.

Kim’s Best Tips
You can choose either the 1-tablespoon measurements or the small-batch measurements. They’re two different batch options, so don’t combine both ingredient groups.
Cloves have the strongest flavor in the blend. I like including them, but they’re optional and can be reduced or left out. You can also leave out the allspice if you don’t have it. The final blend won’t taste exactly the same, but it will still work in your recipe.
If you only need 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice, make the 1-tablespoon version, use 1 teaspoon, and store the remaining 2 teaspoons. That’s much easier than trying to divide the recipe into measurements smaller than ⅛ teaspoon.
Use this blend in our pumpkin spice muffins, pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice latte, or pumpkin spice creamer. For a slightly different fall blend, try our apple pie spice.

How to Make Pumpkin Pie Spice
To make 1 tablespoon: Just combine 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon, ½ teaspoon ground ginger, ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, ¼ teaspoon ground allspice, and ¼ teaspoon ground cloves.
Stir the spices together in a small bowl until everything is well combined. Use the full tablespoon anywhere a recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice.

To make a small batch: Combine 6 tablespoons ground cinnamon, 4 teaspoons ground ginger, 4 teaspoons ground nutmeg, 2 teaspoons ground allspice, and 2 teaspoons ground cloves.
Mix everything in a bowl, or place the spices in a jar with enough empty space to shake them together. The small batch makes about 10 tablespoons.

Transfer the pumpkin pie spice to a labeled airtight jar and keep it in a cool, dry pantry. It’s best used within about 6 months, especially if the individual spices were already open when you mixed them.
How Much Pumpkin Pie Spice to Use
You can use this homemade blend in the same amount as store-bought pumpkin pie spice. If a recipe calls for 1 tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice, use 1 tablespoon of this mixture. If it calls for 1 teaspoon, use 1 teaspoon.
Don’t automatically replace every individual spice in a recipe with the blend. Some recipes, including our pumpkin pie, use pumpkin pie spice along with extra cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves to create a specific flavor.
When doubling a pumpkin pie or baking recipe, double the pumpkin pie spice along with the rest of the ingredients. It’s a 1:1 swap.
