Chocolate Cherry Milkshake
This cherry shake is thick, creamy, and has a classic cherry vanilla flavor. It’s the kind of milkshake that tastes like an old-school ice cream shop treat, but you can make it at home in minutes.
There is an optional extra step, but it’s worth it for the chocolate “shell” effect. Drizzle Magic Shell inside the glass and it sets into a thin layer as it chills.

Why this Cherry Milkshake Works
- Real cherry flavor: Frozen sweet cherries give it a true cherry taste, not just “pink syrup.”
- Thick and creamy: Vanilla ice cream works perfectly for the base.
- Easy chocolate finish: Magic Shell sets fast, so it’s super simple to get that chocolate-cherry combo.
What You’ll Need
The ingredient list is short: frozen sweet cherries, ice cream, whole milk, and a little maraschino cherry juice for extra cherry flavor. For the top, whipped cream and a maraschino cherry are classics.
If you want the “chocolate covered” look, grab Magic Shell or chocolate syrup for drizzling.

How to make a chocolate cherry milkshake
First, drizzle Magic Shell (or chocolate syrup) around the inside of two glasses. Pop the glasses in the freezer while you blend the shake.
Next, add the vanilla ice cream, milk, thawed frozen cherries, and maraschino cherry juice to a blender.

Then, blend until thick and smooth. If it’s too thick to blend easily, add a splash more milk and blend again.
After that, pour into the chilled glasses and top with whipped cream, more chocolate drizzle, and a maraschino cherry. Add a fun straw and enjoy!
Chocolate drizzle options
If you’re deciding between the a shell coating and syrup, here’s the difference:
- Magic Shell: Sets into a thin, crackly chocolate layer as soon as it hits something cold. This is the best choice if you want that “chocolate lined glass” look and little chocolate bits with every sip.
- Chocolate syrup: Stays soft and drippy. It’s still delicious, just more like a classic diner-style chocolate drizzle.
Either one works. It’s going to be great either way.

Tips for the Best Texture
- Too thick? Add more milk, a tablespoon at a time, and blend again.
- Too thin? Add a little more ice cream and blend again.
- Need more cherry flavor? Add another splash of maraschino cherry juice or a few more cherries and re-blend.
Storage
Milkshakes are best right after blending. If you need to save leftovers, freeze them in a cup and let them sit out for 10–15 minutes before stirring and drinking.
