If you’ve ever wondered whether you can make hot chocolate using chocolate chips without cocoa powder, you can.
This is the easiest method I know. Warm the milk, melt the chips, stir in the vanilla, and that’s it!
In case you prefer to eat your hot chocolate instead of drink it, make sure to try my dreamy hot chocolate pie! It has a chocolate Oreo crust, a creamy hot cocoa filling, and a fluffy marshmallow topping.
Ingredients you’ll need
- Milk: whole milk is the creamiest, but 2% works.
- Chocolate chips: use your favorite variety!
- Vanilla extract.
Optional toppings: whipped cream, mini marshmallows, or chocolate shavings.
How to Make Hot Chocolate with Chocolate Chips

If you prefer homemade hot chocolate in the microwave, mix milk and chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl.
Heat in 30-second bursts, and stir well after each round.
Continue heating until the chips fully melt. Stir until smooth, mix in the vanilla, and serve immediately.
Tips for Smooth Hot Chocolate
- Keep the heat low. Chocolate melts best slowly.
- Whisk while the chips melt so the drink turns silky instead of speckled.
- For sweeter hot chocolate, add 1–2 teaspoons sugar while the milk warms.
- Prefer a milder drink? Use milk chocolate chips or do a half-and-half mix.

Will chocolate chips melt in hot milk?
They will as long as the milk is hot but not boiling. Keep the heat low and whisk as they melt.
What chocolate chips are best for hot chocolate?
Semi-sweet is the most balanced. Milk chocolate is sweeter, and dark chocolate is more intense. Use whatever kind you like best.
Storage
Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container for up to 3 days.
