Crispy Fried Okra

Fried okra is dipped in a mixture of buttermilk and savory spices before being coated in a light breading and fried to perfection.

Wash the okra pods. Then, cut the pods into 1/2 inch thick slices.

Step 1

Add the okra, buttermilk garlic salt, and pepper to a large mixing bowl.

Step 2

Stir the ingredients to combine, and set aside.

Step 3

Pour the flour, cornmeal, garlic salt, onion powder, paprika, and pepper into a large plastic bag.

Step 4

Seal the top of the bag closed, and gently shake to combine the ingredients.

Step 5

Portion out about 1/4 cup of okra at a time and allow the excess buttermilk to drip off. Place it in the bag, and shake to coat.

Step 6

Remove the okra from the bag, and place it on a wire rack. Make sure to separate it so it doesn't clump together.

Step 7

Fry the okra in a heavy bottomed pan for 3-4 minutes then drain on a wire rack or paper towels.

Step 8

Serve crispy fried okra with your favorite entree or as a side dish with ranch dressing.
